Day-by-Day Itinerary
Pick-up from your hotel or designated meeting point. Begin a scenic drive through the Kenyan countryside, passing through agricultural towns as the landscape transforms into the arid north. Cross the equator with a brief stop for photos and a demonstration of the Coriolis effect — a memorable journey milestone.
Arrive at Samburu National Reserve and check into Samburu Sopa Lodge. Enjoy a welcome lunch featuring local and international dishes before heading out on your first game drive.
Set out across Samburu in search of the famous Special Five: Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and beisa oryx — animals rarely found in any other Kenyan reserve.
Return to the lodge for dinner. Optional evening activity: a cultural talk or traditional Maasai dance performance under the stars.
Rise early for the best wildlife activity of the day. Witness the spectacular sunrise and observe predators — lions, leopards, and cheetahs — in action across the reserve's open plains and acacia woodland.
Return for a hearty breakfast, then head back out along the Ewaso Ng'iro River — a lifeline for the reserve's wildlife. Watch large elephant herds drinking, crocodiles basking on the banks, and an incredible variety of bird species in the riverine forest.
Enjoy a scenic picnic lunch within the reserve. Afterwards, visit a Samburu village to learn about the community's way of life — engage with locals, listen to stories, and browse handmade crafts to take home as lasting memories.
Another game drive focused on the unique flora and fauna of Samburu — tracking the Special Five, seeking out leopards in the trees, and spotting some of the reserve's 450+ bird species.
Return to the lodge for dinner. End the day with a guided stargazing session — far from city lights, the African night sky over Samburu is extraordinary, with your guide pointing out constellations and sharing stories of the stars.
One last optional early morning game drive for any remaining wildlife encounters — perhaps a final sighting of the reticulated giraffe or a leopard in the morning light before departure.
Enjoy your final breakfast at Samburu Sopa Lodge, check out, and bid farewell to this remarkable wilderness before beginning the journey south to Nairobi.
Stop for lunch at a local restaurant on the route back to Nairobi. Arrive in the city in the afternoon for drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Most travelers need Kenya's eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). Apply online in advance and have your passport, travel details, and accommodation info ready before you travel.
Samburu is in a malaria zone — consult a medical professional before travel. Ensure routine vaccinations are up to date and bring personal medication and a basic first-aid kit.
Samburu is excellent year-round. The dry seasons (June–October and January–February) concentrate wildlife around the Ewaso Ng'iro River for exceptional game viewing.
Unlike Kenya's southern parks, Samburu's Special Five are endemic to northern Kenya. The reserve also boasts some of Africa's best leopard sightings and spectacular birdlife.
