History & Conservation

Meru National Park gained global recognition through the story of Elsa the lioness, made famous by Born Free.

In the early 2000s, the park underwent a major transformation with support from the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Anti-poaching measures, infrastructure improvements, and wildlife reintroduction programs restored Meru into a thriving ecosystem.

Today, it is part of a protected Lion Conservation Unit, playing a key role in preserving Kenya’s big cats and other endangered species
