History of Mount Kenya National Park

Established in 1949 to protect Mount Kenya and its surrounding wilderness 
Originally a forest reserve, aimed at conservation and water catchment protection  
Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 

The park was created to protect biodiversity, preserve glaciers and landscapes, and maintain its vital role in Kenya’s water ecosystem, while also supporting sustainable tourism and outdoor adventures.

Mount Kenya National Park covers approximately 715 square kilometers (276 square miles).
