Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Nairobi in your private 4x4 safari vehicle for Lake Nakuru National Park — a scenic 2.5 to 3 hour drive northwest through the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The dramatic descent into the valley floor, with its characteristic yellow acacia woodland and euphorbia-covered ridges, sets the mood for the adventure ahead.
Arrive at your lodge or camp inside Lake Nakuru National Park. Options include Lake Nakuru Lodge, Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, or Mbweha Safari Camp — all positioned with striking views over the park and the shimmering lake below. Enjoy a welcome lunch before heading out.
Your first game drive follows the western lake circuit — one of Kenya's most rewarding short drives. Watch white rhinos grazing along the shoreline, Rothschild's giraffes browsing the acacia canopy, flamingos lining the water in vivid pink, and a constant parade of buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks, and impalas across the open grassland.
Head to Baboon Cliff viewpoint for a spectacular panorama over the entire lake as the sun sets — a perfect first evening in the Rift Valley. Return to the lodge for dinner.
Rise for Nakuru's most magical hour — the golden sunrise over the lake with flamingos glowing pink and predators still active. Check the acacia forest near Mikingo Hill for leopards and scan Lion Hill ridge for the park's occasionally tree-climbing lions before breakfast.
Return for a hearty breakfast, check out, and depart for the Masai Mara National Reserve — approximately a 4 to 5 hour drive southwest through the Rift Valley, passing Kericho's emerald tea estates and the rolling Mau Escarpment.
Arrive at the Masai Mara in time for lunch, then head straight out on an afternoon game drive across the reserve's famous golden plains. The contrast between Nakuru's intimate, forested landscape and the Mara's vast open savannah is immediate and breathtaking.
Watch the Mara's horizon turn gold as the sun sets, then return to the lodge for dinner and your first night in one of Africa's most legendary wildlife reserves.
The Mara at sunrise is extraordinary — golden light sweeping across the plains, lion prides beginning to stir, cheetahs scanning the open grassland. A full morning drive gives maximum time to track predators and follow wildlife in the soft hours before the heat of the day.
Return for a late breakfast, then head to the Mara River — where hippo pods and Nile crocodiles are a permanent presence. During July–October, this is the stage for the Great Migration's dramatic wildebeest river crossings — one of the world's most breathtaking wildlife spectacles.
Continue exploring a different section of the reserve — searching for the Big Five, following cheetahs on the hunt, and discovering the Mara's 450+ bird species. Optionally visit a Maasai village to meet warriors, experience traditional dances, and learn about the ancient culture of the people who share this land with wildlife.
Watch the Mara's sky turn amber and violet as the sun sets over the savannah, then enjoy dinner back at the lodge under an extraordinary African night sky.
A spectacular finale — drift silently above the Mara's plains as dawn breaks and wildlife moves below. The balloon flight ends with a champagne bush breakfast in the savannah. Must be pre-booked and involves additional cost. Ask us when booking your safari.
One last morning drive across the golden grassland — a final chance to say farewell to the Mara's lions, elephants, and open plains before returning to the lodge for breakfast and check-out.
Depart the Masai Mara and begin the journey back to Nairobi, stopping for lunch at a selected restaurant en route. Arrive in Nairobi in the late afternoon.
Drop-off at your Nairobi hotel or transfer directly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Your 4-day Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara safari concludes here — safari njema!

What to Know Before You Go
At 1,756m above sea level, Lake Nakuru is significantly cooler than most Kenyan parks — bring a warm layer for early morning game drives. Temperatures range from 12°C to 25°C year-round, making it comfortable and refreshing.
Flamingo populations fluctuate with water levels and algae availability. While sometimes spectacular, their presence is not guaranteed. Regardless, Nakuru delivers exceptional rhino, leopard, and Rothschild's giraffe sightings year-round.
The famous wildebeest river crossings in the Masai Mara occur from July to October. Travel outside this window still delivers excellent Big Five and predator viewing across the Mara's open plains throughout the year.
The optional hot air balloon on Day 4 must be pre-booked and paid separately. Spaces are limited — contact us at the time of booking your safari and we'll confirm your place in advance.
Most travelers need Kenya's eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). Apply online before departure with your passport, travel details, and accommodation information ready well in advance.
