History of Tsavo East

Tsavo has a fascinating history dating back centuries when early traders crossed the region during ancient trade routes between the coast and inland Africa.

The park was officially gazetted in 1949, when the construction of the A109 highway divided the original Tsavo National Park into Tsavo East and Tsavo West.

The park gained worldwide fame because of the legendary “Man-Eaters of Tsavo”, two lions that terrorized railway workers during the construction of the Kenya–Uganda railway in the late 1800s.

Park Size

Tsavo East National Park covers approximately 13,747 square kilometers (about 5,300 square miles), making it the largest national park in Kenya.Together with neighboring Tsavo West National Park, it forms one of the largest protected wildlife ecosystems in Africa.
